In a tragic incident that has shaken the community of Columbus, Ohio, Dewarin Powell, a 22-year-old man, has been arrested and charged with the murder of 27-year-old Remarcus Smith-Heagler. The arrest was made on Thursday by Columbus police SWAT officers, weeks after the fatal shooting that took place at the Stone Lodge Apartments on Cedar Drive.
The harrowing events unfolded on August 21 when police received a report of a crash at the apartment complex. Upon arrival, officers quickly discovered that Smith-Heagler had sustained gunshot wounds. Witnesses later recounted that he had been in a vehicle, attempting to navigate around the complex when he collided with another car. The scene was chaotic, with shell casings littered in front of the apartment complex, indicating the seriousness of the incident.
According to Columbus Police Sgt. Joe Albert, Smith-Heagler was found critically injured and was promptly transported to Mount Carmel East Hospital. Despite the medical efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries two days later, making a tragic loss for his family and friends. The incident was further compounded by the discovery of a dog in Smith-Heaglers car, which also tragically died from gunshot wounds.
As investigations progressed, authorities uncovered critical details surrounding the circumstances leading to the shooting. Records from the Franklin County Municipal Court revealed that both Powell and another suspect, Shavez Hargrave, who remains at large, had allegedly arranged a drug deal with Smith-Heagler. The meeting point was set at the Stone Lodge Apartments, where the situation quickly escalated into a robbery attempt.
Court documents indicate that when Smith-Heagler arrived at the location, Powell and Hargrave attempted to rob him. In the ensuing struggle, Smith-Heagler was shot while trying to escape, ultimately leading to the crash that would claim his life. The nature of the crime has raised alarm bells in the community, highlighting the dangers associated with drug-related activities.
The arrest of Powell is a significant development in the ongoing investigation, though the search for Hargrave continues. The community has expressed relief that one suspect is in custody, but the fear and concern remain palpable as residents grapple with the implications of such violence in their neighborhood.
Powell had court on Saturday and is scheduled for his next appearance on October 15 at 9AM. A bond was not set on Saturday during court. As of now there is no bond set. The judicial process will now determine the next steps in this case, as the community awaits justice for Smith-Heagler and his family.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the impact that gun violence and drug-related crimes can have on communities. It underscores the importance of addressing the root causes of such violence, fostering dialogue and promoting safety measures to prevent future tragedies. As Columbus grapples with this loss, the hope for healing and justice remains strong in the hearts of those affected.
