Man Arrested After Allegedly Biting Off Portion of Security Guard’s Finger at Columbus Kroger

KrogerOn August 6, 2025, Columbus, Ohio, was shaken by a shocking incident at a Kroger store located in the south part of the city. A 58-year-old man, identified as LA Willis, was arrested after allegedly biting off a portion of a security guard’s thumb during a confrontation in the store. The incident highlights issues of safety and security in retail environments, as well as the unpredictable nature of confrontations between store personnel and trespassers.

According to an affidavit associated with the case, the Columbus Division of Police received a distress call around 11:25 a.m. from the Kroger on Parsons Avenue in the Merion Village neighborhood. Dispatchers reported that a security guard had been injured while attempting to escort Willis out of the store after he had previously been trespassed. The security guard, who had been employed at the store for roughly 30 days, had interacted with Willis several times prior to this incident, indicating a history of trouble with the suspect.

Upon their arrival, officers were briefed on the situation. The security guard had attempted to remove Willis from the premises when the suspect became combative, and a physical struggle ensued. Reports indicate that during the altercation, Willis managed to get on top of the guard and allegedly bit down on his thumb, inflicting serious injuries. After the incident, the guard was transported to Grant Medical Center, where he was reported in stable condition.

Sgt. James Fuqua of the Columbus Division of Police reported that Willis was apprehended a short distance from the scene, at the intersection of Parsons Avenue and Hanford Street. Despite being taken into custody, court documents state that Willis refused to comply with the police’s requests, including refusing to allow a mugshot to be taken and declining to answer any questions regarding the incident.

Willis now faces serious legal consequences. He has been charged with one count of felonious assault, which carries significant penalties in Ohio, especially given the “victim seriously harmed specification” attached to the charge. This specification indicates that the offense resulted in substantial physical injury to the security guard, potentially leading to harsher sentencing if convicted. Following his arrest, Willis was transported to a Franklin County jail and was scheduled to appear in court the following day.

Kroger IncidentThe incident at the Kroger store has garnered attention not only due to its shocking nature but also because it raises important questions about the safety of workers in retail settings. Confrontations between customers and security personnel are not uncommon, and workers often find themselves in precarious positions when trying to enforce store policies. The security guard’s experience with Willis, having dealt with him multiple times in the past month, underscores the difficulties in managing disruptive individuals in retail environments.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Kroger store was temporarily closed as law enforcement officers processed the scene. However, the store has since reopened for business. The swift response from law enforcement and medical personnel has been commendable, ensuring the injured guard received appropriate care promptly.

As the investigation continues, it serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by security personnel in maintaining a safe environment for both employees and customers. Incidents like this not only pose physical risks but also psychological impacts on those working in retail, highlighting the need for adequate training and support for staff who often act as the first line of defense in preventing crime and maintaining order.

The case against LA Willis will proceed in the Franklin County Municipal Court, where the details of the incident will likely be examined more thoroughly, and a judgment shall be rendered. Society must consider what measures can be implemented to enhance the safety of retail environments, ensuring that employees can perform their duties without fear of violence or injury.
