Operation Pocket Aces: A Major Blow to Gang Violence in Columbus

Pocket Aces     In a significant law enforcement initiative, Columbus police have arrested 16 individuals on felony drug and gang charges following an extensive two-year investigation known as “Operation Pocket Aces.” This operation specifically targeted the “Livingston and Lonsdale Bloods,” a local chapter of the Bloods street gang, which has long been identified as a major source of crime and violence on the Far East Side of Columbus.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Columbus police First Assistant Chief LaShonna Potts described the gang as “one of the most dangerous and disruptive criminal organization in our community.” The investigation culminated in a staggering 191-count indictment, detailing a range of criminal activities that included drug trafficking, firearm offenses, and violent crimes. The indictment highlighted the gang’s involvement in the distribution of a variety of illicit substances, including fentanyl, cocaine, oxycodone, heroin, methamphetamine, and marijuana, often while armed.

The scale of the operation is underscored by the execution of over 20 search warrants, where law enforcement recovered 56 firearms, including two modified to fire automatically, and more than $156,000 in cash. The police emphasized the danger of the gang’s activites, noting that drug trafficking often occurred in proximity to schools, which could lead to enhanced criminal penalties.

Sgt. Shawn Gruber, representing the Greg Enforcement Unit, confirmed that while most of the arrested individuals faced nonviolent felony charges, two suspects were charged with violent felonies, including attempted murder stemming from prior incidents. This multifaceted approach highlights the police’s commitment to addressing not only drug-related issues but also the violent crime associated with gang activities.

The roots of the Livingston and Lonsdale Bloods can be traced back to the broader Bloods gang, which originated in Los Angeles in the 1970’s. The bloods are known for their rivalry with the Crips and have since splintered into various smaller fractions, such as the Livingston and Lonsdale Bloods. These gangs have been implicated in numerous violent incidents over the years, including past murder cases linked to inter-gang rivalries.

The recent arrests are part of a larger strategy by the Columbus police to disrupt gang violence in the region. Potts assured the community of ongoing efforts to combat these issues, stating, “We will continue to utilize all of the tools at our disposal, including intelligence sharing, surveillance, and coordination with our federal, local, and state partners.” This commitment extends beyond the single operation, signaling to other gang members that law enforcement will relentlessly pursue those who threaten public safety.

Community reactions to the arrests have been mixed. Some residents expressed relief at the news, feeling that the removal of such dangerous individuals from their neighborhoods would contribute to a safer environment. One resident, Chandler Tennant, remarked on the positive impact the arrests could have on everyday life in the community, stating “Now we can go to the store safer, and that’s the best thing.”

However, the police acknowledge that this operation is just one part of an ongoing battle against gang violence. Sgt. Gruber indicated that they have laid groundwork for future operations, warning that if gang members continue their criminal activities, they will face severe consequences.

Operation Pocket Aces      The Columbus division of Police has made it clear that they are committed to a sustained effort against gang-related crimes. As they continue to investigate and gather intelligence, they aim to dismantle not only the Livingston and Lonsdale Bloods but any gang that threatens the safety of the community. The collaboration with federal and local authorities, as well as ongoing surveillance and intelligence operations, suggests a robust framework for tackling organized crime effectively.

In summary, Operation Pocket Aces represents a significant step forward in law enforcement’s efforts to combat gang violence in Columbus. By targeting the Livingston and Lonsdale Bloods, police are sending a strong message that criminal activity will not be tolerated. As they move forward with this initiative, the hope is that the community will feel safer and that the cycle of violence will be curtailed through persistent and coordinated law enforcement efforts.
